Mediterranean diet (MD) is the most relevant nutritional aspect of the multisecular Mediterranean civilisation which includes wine as an element of health and wellbeing when consumed with moderation. Mediterranean meals provide food micronutrients which include polyphenols, especially resveratrol from grape and red wine. MD, also called Cretan diet, has been proven to prevent diseases including cardiovascular pathologies, cancer, and to prevent aging. Interestingly, the grape and more precisely in grape skin contains the highest concentration of RSV. In consequence, red wine is the most concentrated food source of RSV found in the human diet. This review topic deals to how efficient is RSV …

Physical Activity Predicts Population-Level Age-Related Differences in Frontal White Matter

2020

Physical activity has positive effects on brain health and cognitive function throughout the life span. Thus far, few studies have examined the effects of physical activity on white matter microstructure and psychomotor speed within the same, population-based sample (critical if conclusions are to extend to the wider population). Here, using diffusion tensor imaging and a simple reaction time task within a relatively large population-derived sample (N = 399; 18–87 years) from the Cambridge Centre for Ageing and Neuroscience (Cam-CAN), we demonstrate that physical activity mediates the effect of age on white matter integrity, measured with fractional anisotropy. Higher self-reported daily ph…

Brain Aging in Insects

1986

The role of the central nervous system (CNS) in the modulation of homeostatic mechanisms and the aging process especially in mammals, has been well investigated by several authors (Blumenthal 1970, Ordy and Brizzee 1975, Hoffmeister and Muller 1979, Samorajski 1980, Buschmann 1982, Hoyer 1982, Frolkis et al. 1984). In insects the crucial role of the CNS in developmental processes is well established; however, it is an open question whether the brain also governs the aging processes.

N-acetylcysteine protects against age-related increase in oxidized proteins in mouse synaptic mitochondria.

1997

Since it has been proposed that oxidized protein accumulation plays a critical role in brain aging, we have investigated the effect of a thiolic antioxidant on protein carbonyl content in synaptic mitochondria from female OF-1 mice. At 48 weeks of age, a control group was fed standard food pellets and another group received pellets containing 0.3% (w/w) of N-acetylcysteine. A 24-week treatment resulted in a significant decrease in protein carbonyl content in synaptic mitochondria of the N-acetylcysteine-treated animals as compared to age-matched controls.

Selected Age-Related Disorders

2013

Aged human individuals are frequently affected by various age-related impairments and disorders at once (multimorbidity) making it difficult to investigate and understand the link between aging as key risk factor and single syndromes. In some chapters of this book links have been identified between molecular mechanisms of aging and the pathogenesis of human disorders in the elderly. Here, the focus is put on Alzheimers disease (AD) and cancer. While cancer in many cases can successfully be treated and sometimes even cured by pharmacology and/or surgery, AD is still an incurable deadly disease. Like almost no other disorder the onset of AD is strictly associated with higher age and experienc…

Lifelong Learning in Seniors in the Perspective of the Neuro- and Psychosocial Concept

2019
